Abstract

Physical activity or exercise is, along with healthy eating, of the main factors that protect children from the epidemic of childhood obesity that afflicts Mexico and much of the rest of the world. In turn, parents exert a strong influence on the type and amount of physical activity of their children. There is no test in Mexico that evaluates the promotion of physical activity that parents specifically do with their children. Objective. The goal was to validate a mexican translation of the Activity Support Scale for Múltiple Groups (ACTS-MG) and inform about their psychometric charateristics. Material and Methods. Cross-sectional and ex post facto study. Translation procedure included independent translations, inquiry to experts and backtraslation. Test was validate among 640 parents from Mérida, Yucatan, Mexico whose children were between 6-12 years old. Content validity was obtained by exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Results. The translation-retranslation equivalence was 95.5%. The EFA uncovered four dimensions, that explained 45.54% of the total variance; reliability was 0.885 (Cronbach´s alpha). Conclusions. The mexican adaptation of ACTS-MG, is a valid and reliable tool to use for researchers and clinical diagnosis for profesionals in health and behavior sciences.
