Prevalence and characteristics of HIV carriers in a public hospital in Quintana Roo, Mexico

Abstract

Objective: to know the prevalence and characteristics of cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus in the Public Hospital in 2017. Material and methods: observational, descriptive, and retrolective study. The information from the HIV case studies was used with informed consent; the data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Results: in 2017, 221 new cases of HIV were registered, 81% of new cases diagnosed were in men and 19% in women. As for men, the age group mainly affected by HIV was 25 to 39 years old with 53%, 98% of the users diagnosed were through sexual transmission, 47% reported being homosexual, 29% bisexual, and 22% heterosexual, 53% of the users were diagnosed in stages of HIV, the remaining 47% were diagnosed in stage of AIDS. Regarding women, the age group of 25 to 39 years was the one with the highest prevalence (50%).  98% acquired HIV through sexual transmission, 93% reported being heterosexual, 80% of the users were diagnosed in stages of HIV, the remaining 20% were diagnosed in stage of AIDS. 27% of the women diagnosed were in gestation period. Conclusions: Mexico presents a HIV concentrated  epidemic that requires strategies to avoid generalization. Knowing the prevalence in in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo , it is urgent for strengthen the prevention, care and control of HIV and AIDS through the promotion of health through actions aimed at developing favorable attitudes for health, generate favorable environments, strengthen community action, redirect health services and promote public policies on the subject.
