Motivations for choosing the bachelor’s degree in nursing at the Tizimin Multidisciplinary Unit

Objective. Identify the main motivations of students for choosing the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing at the Tizimin Multidisciplinary Unit of the Autonomous University of Yucatán. Materials and method. Quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive study in students from the January-July 2021 school period; A questionnaire was self-administered, validated in content, construct and internal consistency. Results. 46 students participated, 41.30% (19) from the fourth semester and 58.70% (27) from the eighth, 67.40% (31) are women and 32.60% (15) are men; 52.17% responded that nursing was their first choice, 36.95% liked it, but at the same time considered other degrees; 78.26% do not have a family member who works in the health sector; 58.69% indicate that they were advised or suggested to study the Bachelor's Degree; Regarding how they felt about the decision to choose the career, 6.52% responded Somewhat satisfied, 47.82%, Fairly satisfied and 45.65%, Very satisfied. Regarding the intrinsic motivators, the following stand out in percentage: 80.43%, Obtain a university degree and 78.26%, Contribute significantly to society through health care and extrinsic: 50.00%, Be financially independent and obtain upon graduation from college, a job in a health care institution, or working independently; They express total disagreement: 71.73% “Study nursing because my parents told me” and 22% “I chose nursing because it’s an easy career”. Conclusions. The main motivations for choosing the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing are intrinsically predominant, among which obtaining an university degree and contributing significantly to society stand out.
