Un cambio en el enfoque de la investigación clínica odontológica centrada en el paciente

La investigación clínica en odontología busca proveer información sólida sobre la eficacia y eficiencia de las intervenciones preventivas y terapéuticas. Sin embargo, el paradigma del modelo de salud con la integración del bienestar social es biopsicosocial. En medicina ha habido un avance hacia la investigación centrada en el paciente que busca producir evidencia científica sobre la efectividad de opciones de prevención y tratamiento para informar las decisiones de salud de los pacientes, las familias y los proveedores de servicios de salud tomando en consideración sus preferencias y valores. En odontología el avance ha sido menor, aun cuando estudios han incorporado los “desenlaces reportados por el paciente” que reflejan la evaluación en salud del propio paciente. Estos desenlaces han sido mayormente dolor y calidad de vida y poco se ha indagado sobre la visión y experiencia de los pacientes sobre su enfermedad y tratamiento. El paciente es quien padece la enfermedad y requiere atención, es por ello que la investigación clínica odontológica debe escuchar la voz del paciente para obtener información relevante que refleje valores, expectativas, experiencias, dudas y preferencias en relación a la atención dental.
